The Laird of Darkness by Nicole North

Laird of Darkness by Nicole North
* I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review*

Half-Fae Laird Duncan MacDougall is cursed. His nights are haunted by Otherworld creatures sent to kill him. The only way to stop them is to possess the magic bow currently in the hands of his enemy half brother, Kinnon MacClaren. In desperation, Duncan plans to take MacClaren’s bride-to-be hostage and exchange her for the bow.

Lady Alana Forbes has never met her intended, but she hopes he is handsome—and a good lover, for Alana is no innocent virgin. On her way to Castle Claren, Alana and her escorts are intercepted, and she is kidnapped by a man with extraordinary abilities—and every attribute she longs for in a mate.

Duncan didn’t expect the woman he thought of as a mere pawn to be so beautiful, and so arousing. Alana is drawn to him as well—but Duncan still needs the bow, and Alana is betrothed to another. How far will Alana go to save the life of the man she’s come to love?

Laird of Darkness transports us to the Scottish Highlands.  Duncan MacDougall has been roaming his lands at night for years.  He can’t sleep at night or the creatures from the Otherworld will attack him.  They are able to injure him, even in his dreams.  The only time he even attempts to sleep for a few hours is during the daytime.

His half brother Kinnon MacClaren possess the one thing that will help him get rid of the nightmares, a magic bow.  Their mother gave it to Kinnon before she was kidnapped by Duncan’s father.  She died before during childbirth so Duncan never had a chance.  She also had a curse put on both brothers because she feared they would kill each other.

Duncan is determined to get that bow and will do whatever it takes, even capturing Lady Alana, Kinnon’s bride-to-be.  What he didn’t expect was to want keep Alana for himself.  She was light to his darkness and surprised him every time he turned around.

Alana was surprised by Duncan’s kindness.  She was his prisoner but he treated both her and her people well.  She is afraid of the situation she will find when she gets to Lord MacClaren’s because they weren’t entirely honest with him.  She is very much a woman who knows what she wants when it comes to carnal pleasures.  She wants a man that is generous in bed and is a good lover.

I loved everything about this story.  Duncan is my favorite type of hero, a very tortured hero that is misunderstood.  He has been made out to be the villain because of actions his father took and he can’t shake that image.  Everyone is afraid of him and the evil he possess.  Alana is not afraid of him, instead she is drawn into his world.  She finds him intriguing and is not afraid to ask him for what she wants, him.

The chemistry between Duncan and Alana is hot.  He wants her, even though he knows he shouldn’t but he can’t stop himself.  He is drawn to her like a moth to a flame.  Alana has wanted him ever since she saw him nude the first time.  All she can think about is the pleasure he can bring her.  I like the fact that they also spend time together getting to know each other and it’s plain that when Duncan makes the ultimate sacrifice, that he has fallen in love with her.

The background is awesome and I like the twist that keeps the two half-brothers from stepping foot on the other’s land.  Both brothers are acting based on history and they hate each other.  Each one thinks they are the wronged party but in reality, the both are.  I think Alana will help to bridge that gap between the two.

Overall I enjoyed The Laird of Darkness and give it 4 Flaming Hearts.
