Spell Bound by Kelley Armstrong

Spell Bound by Kelley Armstrong
* I received a copy of this book from Dutton in exchange for an honest review*

At last, in the novel every Kelley Armstrong fan will need to own, all the major heroines and heroes of Otherworld are united.

It’s been ten years since Bitten, the first novel in Kelley Armstrong’s New York Times bestselling Otherworld series. In that time hundreds of thousands of fans have ravenously devoured the adventures of Armstrong’s witches, demons, and werewolves. Now, in Spell Bound, she brings them all together for her most sweeping tale yet.

Savannah Levine is in terrible danger, and for once she’s powerless to help herself. At the heartbreaking conclusion of Waking the Witch, Savannah swore that she would give up her powers if it would prevent further pain for a young orphan. Little did she know that someone would take her up on that promise.

And now, witch-hunting assassins, necromancers, half-demons, and rogue witches all seem to be after her. The threat is not just for Savannah; every member of the Otherworld might be at risk. While most of her fellow supernaturals are circling the wagons at a gathering of the council in Miami, Savannah is caught on the road, isolated from those who can protect her and unable to use her vast spell-casting talent, the thing she counts on most. In a story that will change the shape of the Otherworld forever, Armstrong gathers Elena, Clay, Paige, Lucas, Jamie, Hope, and other beloved characters, who soon learn that the greatest threat to supernaturals just may come from within.

Spell Bound is book two in the final trilogy of the Women of the Underworld series. It is a continuation of Savannah’s story with a sprinkling of other beloved characters throughout the book.  There is something big on the horizon, will they be prepared?

Savannah doesn’t want to tell Paige and Lucas that she has lost her powers so she does everything she can to miss her plane to Miami.  In the process, she is kidnapped by a fanatical group that believes supernaturals are going to come out and take over the world.  They believe that certain events that have occurred in the supernatural world are signs, such as Savannah herself, the birth of Clay and Elena’s twins, and several other events.

Adam and Savannah have been investigating this “cult” while trying to figure out who took her powers.  Adam is determined that he will help her get them back, no matter the cost to him.  He is concerned for her safety and just wants to get her to Miami and the protection of the Cabal.  Not only is he beside himself with worry when she gets kidnapped, he is pissed because it could’ve been prevented.

Everyone is in Miami working on the issue of the “cult” and the signs the leader mentioned.  When one of the “signs” goes missing, it sets up a whole chain of events that could turn out very badly for Savannah and her friends.

Savannah has lost her powers and feels helpless in this fight.  As the book progresses she starts to realize that she has plenty to offer the others, even without her magic.  You really see her start to grow up and realize that she has taken so much for granted in her life, not just her powers.  She starts to accept responsibility for her actions and learns to let other’s help her when their skill set is better than hers.  It takes her losing her powers to realize that if she doesn’t change; she is going to lose Adam, even as a friend.

Adam is one of my favorite characters and I think he makes a good match for Savannah.  It’s obvious he cares deeply for her (the end of the book about killed me) but he has trouble getting past the age difference and seeing her as a grownup.  He has indulged her from the beginning but he won’t back down when it comes to her safety.  He is willing to do whatever it takes to get her powers back because that’s what makes Savannah happy.

I love Adam and Savannah together and just want to nudge them along a little faster.  They are good together and their bond is strengthened by their friendship.  When Adam finally does give in, it will be magical – just like that kiss.  I loved seeing my old friends, the wolves along with Paige and Lucas, Hope, Jamie, and everyone else.

I have high hopes for the last book; it has the possibility of being epic, since it will be the culmination of everything that has happened throughout the Otherworld series.  It’s with bitter sweetness that I await the final book in this series.  I can’t wait to see how it ends but after that, there will be no more adventures with some of my favorite characters.

Overall I give Spell Bound 4.5 Flaming Hearts.

  1. Oh! Oh! Oh! I am SO far behind on Armstrong that I read your first paragraph, skipped to the 4.5 stars and am digging through my TBR for the gaps in my backlist with one hand as I type this with the other.
