Cooking the Books by Bonnie S. Calhoun

Book description:

After her mother dies from a heart attack, Sloane Templeton goes from Cyber Crimes Unit to bookstore owner before she can blink. She also “inherits” a half-batty store manager; a strange bunch of little old people from the neighborhood who meet at the store once a week, but never read books, called the Granny Oakleys Book Club; and Aunt Verline, who fancies herself an Iron Chef when in reality you need a cast iron stomach to partake of her culinary disasters. And with a group like this you should never ask, “What else can go wrong?”

A lot! Sloane begins to receive cyber threats. While Sloane uses her computer forensic skills to uncover the source of the threats, it is discovered someone is out to kill her. Can her life get more crazy?

My thoughts:

This was a fun and quirky read.  The story line twisted and turned, and yet was so smooth that it was over before I knew it.

I found Sloane Templeton to be an average American chick trying to figure out her life since the recent loss of her mother.  She wasn’t too keen on running the bookstore she inherited, but she tried to make a go of it.  She is also recently divorced, and her ex just happens to want part of her inheritance.  Her ex-boyfriend was abusive, and he just can’t seem to let her go.  Now, she is with the one she believes is Mr. Right, but is he?  No one else seems to think so, including her late mother.

Sloane also inherited her mother’s gun.  She never imagined she would hold a gun, let alone shoot one.  Just wait till you read what kind of issues she has with that.  I giggled, literally.

One of my favorite parts of the book is discovering the real meaning of the Granny Oakley’s Book Club.  I giggled here too.

Aunt Verline keeps Sloane, the local police department and fire department on their toes.   I love how she was described as fancying herself as an Iron Chef, because on the Iron Chef television show they have every appliance you can think of and apparently so does Aunt Verline.  I think everyone has a crazy family member they can relate her to.

I can’t count how many times I found myself laughing throughout this book.  Then it really became a page turner for me when someone started sending Sloane death threats, and it’s mentioned that her mother’s death might not have been a natural death after all.

Cooking the Books by Bonnie S. Calhoun is her debut novel, which just happens to be the first of the Sloane Templeton Mystery Series and will be released April 2, 2012.
